The research aircraft HALO
took up its duties on 24 January 2009. Since then, the jet has flown over all oceans and continents in 23 missions, collecting environmental and climate data at altitudes of up to 15 kilometres. Often on board: scientists and equipment of Forschungszentrum Jülich, which is one of the six sponsors of the German joint project HALO.
Stefan Grillenbeck, research pilot at the German Aerospace Center, which is the organisation responsible for operating HALO, has been involved since day one. He was at the wheel when the elaborately modified Gulfstream G550 plane was brought from Savannah/USA to Germany. In this interview, Grillenbeck talks about his first encounters with HALO, his life as a test pilot and unforgettable moments in the cockpit.
